Dennis Schroder is lucky because Magic Johnson is not in charge of the Lakers. If so, Johnson would not intend to re-enter Schroder for the 2021-22 NBA season.
In a recent interview 570 AM Los Angeles, Laker’s legend ripped out Schroder and said he didn’t think Schroder had brought a “winning mentality” to Los Angeles.
“I don’t think he’s a Laker,” Johnson said. “That’s my opinion. I don’t know if they’ll sign again or not. I don’t think it leads to a winning mentality and attitude that we need.
“He had a chance to show that in this series. And, for me, he failed in this series.”
He really liked Schroder’s play against the sun. When Los Angeles lost 4-2 to Phoenix, Schroder averaged 14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 32.7 minutes of action per game for the Lakers. However, he threw 40% cold from the pitch and 30.8 per cent from 3 points, and did little to help the team after Anthony Davis ’injury.
When Davis was injured in Game 4, Schroder scored just eight points in the contest as the Lakers stumbled with an eight-point loss. In Game 5, when LeBron James needed a secondary pair to raise and replace Davis, Schroder went 0-9 from the field and had zero points when he lost a 30-point loss.
Since Schroder will be a free agent, his future is at best. The Lakers offered him a $ 84 million contract for four years at one point he seems to have rejected it, but explained that his chance was more than just experimenting with free agency for the first time in his eight-year NBA career in the NBA.
And Schroder confirmed that he would like to return to Los Angeles.
“At the end of the day, like I said, I want to be here and I want to win a championship,” Schroder said when he lost to the Lakers in the Suns 6. “That’s not even a question. And it wasn’t a matter of money, because everyone who knows me knows it’s not even money. Of course, you want it to be fair. But in the end, not everything is money for me and my family.
“At the end of the day, if all goes well, we’ll be back again and we’ll win the championship next year.”
But if Johnson has his way, he would let Schroder ride.
“If Laker comes back, I’ll help him and encourage him and all that. But I don’t think he’s a Laker.”
