LeBron James is expected to be a new number in the 2021-22 NBA season.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, James will wear the No. 6 jersey next year, the number he wore to the Miami Heat’s four-year career.
The change will come after the summer appeared in the movie “Space Jam 2: A New Legacy.”

It’s not the first time James has changed numbers in his career, nor the first time he’s worn the number 6. Here’s a brief history of the jerseys he’s worn in his 18-year NBA career.
Why did LeBron James wear the No. 23, No. 6 jersey throughout his NBA career?
In his first day with the Cavaliers in 2003-10, James wore the No. 23 jersey. The reason for choosing this jersey had to do with Michael Jordan, as he explained in his 2019 interview.
“I’m wearing the number 23 of the great Michael Jordan,” James said. “When I started playing basketball, I was like, ‘Oh man, he looks good in two or three. I want to fly like him. I can shoot like him. I want to be able to dive into someone like him. … Tongue like him. I want to be able to get out in the air and scream in the face of someone like MJ. ”
“So I’ve been wearing the number 23 since I started playing ball.”
However, when James joined the Heat in 2010, he took off his No. 23 jersey and chose to wear his No. 6 jersey. At the time, he explained that he was doing this in honor of Jordan’s heritage.
“I just think that what Michael Jordan has done in the game needs to be recognized in some way soon,” James said Bleacher report. “It wouldn’t be LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade if it weren’t for Michael Jordan first.”
At the time, James demanded the number of retirees during the league.
“I think NBA players shouldn’t wear 23. I’m starting an application and I have to sign everyone in the NBA.” James said. “Now, if I don’t wear the number 23, no one else could wear it.”
This never took any force off, so when James returned to Cleveland in 2014, he chose to wear the No. 23 jersey. She has 23 outfits from that point until the last change was announced between 2014-21.
Why does LeBron James change the jersey number again?
But why is LeBron changing again? Well, what can he have seen with teammate Anthony Davis.
Before coming to the Lakers, Davis always wore a 23 jersey with pelicans, and James was fine with the idea of giving Davis a number. However, per Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Nike has closed before the 2019-20 season:
Due to production issues and the huge financial success it would absorb from Nike’s already No. 23 inventory, Nike has been unable to accommodate demand this season, sources said.
After a couple of years, maybe Nike is better suited to fit the switch, especially if James and Davis are making great strides.
However, as Charania and Tim Cato of The Athletic have reported, Davis is expected to keep his No. 3 jersey. So maybe there’s another reason James is chosen to change things up again.
